Day 2Ancient City of Phoinice-Mesopotam                                                                                                                        After breakfast, we shall proceed to Phoinice, where we begin our tour with a small presentation about this ancient city—one  of the greatest in the Epirus region, with a theater

that once held 15,000 to 18,000 people (one of the worlds biggest!). Although it has not fully been excavated, it is a fascinating place that rings with cultural importance.

Following lunch in a nearby restaurant, we will travel to the Monastery of Mesopotam, a pagan-temple-turned-Byzantine church that is one of the largest and oldest churches of its era. Today’s journey (approximately five to five-and-a-half hours of walking) takes use along unpaved roads through the countryside of the Drinos Valley via the pass of Muzine. This beautiful landscape is dotted with small villages just steps away from the mountains. Overnight in Gjirokastra

Day 3 – Explore Gjirokastra, World Heritage City

More ancient history is on the agenda today, as we explore Gjirokastra, an Ottoman town that has been declared a World Heritage City. This venerable town, located nearly a thousand feet above sea level, occupies a dramatic setting in a lush valley beneath the high Mountains near the rushing river Drinos. An important site since prehistoric times, the city is dominated by an enormous Ottoman fortress that helped keep guard along one of the main North-South routes of the Balkans. For hundreds of years, the region weathered pillaging crusaders—stories of which are still among local lore. The old part of town features Ottoman homes with elegant verandas, beautiful windows, and expertly cut shale roofs that stand in stark contrast to the grim, Communist-built suburbs in the

floodplain below. The charming streets are narrow, with perfectly placed cobblestone, creating a fairytale effect as we wander through.

Here we will visit one of the largest castles in the Balkans, the Arms Museum, the Ethnographic Museum (once the home of the Communist dictator Enver Hoxha), and more. We will also enjoy

a private visit to a 17th century monastery which is still in operation. This Sufi Monastery, Bektashi, houses a “heretical” Sufi sect that is celibate, anti-hierarchical, anti-dogmatic, and welcoming of women. Lunch today will be in a local restaurant in the Old Bazaar. Overnight in Gjirokastra
